Overview

We serve as a vital support network, uniting people with different abilties and additonal needs under a common goal—enriching lives. Our advocacy extends to promoting their rights for inclusion in schools, workplaces, and communities. Together, we strive to create a more inclusive and supportive environment.

T21 NPO (Trisomy 21 Non-Profit Organization) is dedicated to empowering individuals with Down Syndrome in the Cayman Islands by raising awareness  and fostering  inclusion

We are creating awareness about T21 and are committed to assisting and advocating for all individuals with different abilities and additional needs. We believe that different abilities and additional needs are cross-cutting issues which emphasises the need to bridge gaps between the person to access the existing community and the need to assist to people with disabilities at every stage of their life, from birth to their transition to independence and adulthood.

The pillars of the T21 NPO are to  support, advocate and promote the safety, the development and the enrichment of the lives of individuals with T21/Down Syndrome, different abilities and additional needs.

  • Providing support to individuals with T21 at each stage of their lives and transition with the end goal of independence as adults with allied health care providers / therapists / care givers in the homes and in the schools and in the community;
  • Providing a support network to parents for knowledge and awareness for health needs both medical and therapeutic;
  • Providing access in education and life experiences to enable individuals with T21 to flourish in an assisted living scenario and independently in the primary and secondary schools with the assistance of nannies in the home and teachers’ aides in the schools;
  • Providing a safe environment for children, young adults and adults to congregate and socialize with age appropriate activities and enriching their lives with experiences that neurotypical peers are also enjoying (sports – karate, tennis, football, pickleball, sailing, special Olympics, travelling to camps in North America, movie nights, meals, concerts, arts, music) and by identifying locally and internationally clubs, camps and life experiences as other neurotypical peers of their age.

Frequently asked T21 questions

What does T21 stand for in Down Syndrome?

T21 refers to Trisomy 21, the medical term for Down syndrome. “Trisomy” means having three copies of a particular chromosome instead of the usual two. In this case, individuals with Down syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21. This genetic difference is the underlying cause of the physical and developmental traits associated with the condition.

How does an extra copy of the 21st chromosome affect someone?

Individuals with Down syndrome have three copies of the 21st chromosome, instead of two. Normally, humans have 46 chromosomes, arranged in 23 pairs, but people with Down syndrome have 47 because of this extra chromosome. This extra genetic material affects brain and body development, leading to characteristic features like intellectual delays, certain physical traits, and an increased likelihood of medical conditions such as heart issues or thyroid disorders.

Why is World Down Syndrome Day celebrated on March 21st?

March 21st (3/21) is chosen as World Down Syndrome Day because it symbolizes the three copies of chromosome 21 that define Down syndrome. This date raises awareness of the condition and advocates for inclusion and rights for people with Down syndrome. The connection between the date and the chromosomal abnormality makes it a meaningful way to spread understanding.

Why are blue and yellow the recognized colors for Down Syndrome?

Blue and yellow are globally recognized as the awareness colors for Down syndrome. These colors are used in campaigns, events, and celebrations to raise awareness and show solidarity with individuals who have Down syndrome. Wearing blue and yellow, particularly on World Down Syndrome Day, helps spread awareness and fosters a sense of community and support for those with the condition.

What do the three arrows represent in Down Syndrome awareness?

The three arrows symbolize the three copies of chromosome 21 found in individuals with Down syndrome. Often pointing upward, the arrows represent growth, positivity, and the idea of rising above challenges. The symbol is widely embraced by the Down syndrome community, reflecting the belief in the capabilities and potential of individuals with Down syndrome, and their ability to thrive despite challenges.

Raising awareness, fostering connections, and working towards a future where every person, regardless of ability, is valued and included.
